how to cook old school: easy bbq pulled pork recipe

Welcome back to yet another installment of how to cook old school.  Using the crock pot is a sure fire way to simplify your life, and kick “fast food” to the curb.
Slow food is the new fast food.   The time it takes for you to prep this meal, you would have barely touched the drive-thru line at your local burger shop.
Sure Rachel Ray cooks things in 30 minutes, but something that’s been cooking for 7+ hours tastes way better.

It’s this easy:

bone-in 3lb pork shoulder* {pastured if you can find it!}
3 small yellow onions
24 ounces of BBQ sauce {we used our homemade}
2 tsp of cumin
2 tsp of garlic powder
sea salt and pepper to your liking
*bone-in adds flavor.  and the bones release all sorts of mineral goodness to your dish.

1.) Chop some onion in quarters and toss in crock pot.
2.) Put pork shoulder on top.
3.) Rub sea salt, pepper, garlic powder, and the cumin on pork shoulder.
4.) Dump 24 ounces of your favorite bbq sauce, preferably homemade*,
or at least without high octane high fructose corn syrup.
5.) Cook on high for 6 hours.  Or low for a minimum of 9 hours.  We did the six hours, and it was amazing.  You can cook this as long as 18-24 hours on low!

6.) Then simply shred the pork with two forks, removing skin and fat along the way.  Or eat the fat if you wish…

*The King makes his bbq sauce homemade.  But I have to strong arm him to let me share it. He wants to enter it in contests and be the next Bobby Flay, so I think it remains an estate family secret. Sorry.
This amount fed my three hungry boys and me, with lots of leftovers to spare.  This, served with my amazing simple spicy coleslaw, would be a perfect meal.
Thanks for reading…
And remember get out of the drive-thru, and back in the kitchen.
With love,
Nicolette

    Sounds good! I have done pulled pork in the slow cooker by just cooking it with a can of soda like Root Beer. Then I shred it and add the BBQ sauce. Your coleslaw also looks yummy! So colorful!

  2. Looks very tasty – pinned it :)

  5. THis looks really good! Funny, I just used my crock pot the other night and we said “why don’t we cook everything in the crock pot?!” I agree- everything does taste amazing after slow cooking 7hours!
