Homemade Jello Recipe {sans colorings, funky preservatives, and added sugars}

As a kid of the 80s, I was a sucker for all things that Bill Cosby aggresively promoted.  Given that I used to down a half of box of these puppies in a sitting, I was one of this company’s best customers.

Now, that processed crap is out of the question {and I haven’t seen these delectable 80s treats in groceries, since, well, the 80s}, I had to recreate a treat that was safe for my boys.

Time to introduce the boys to the momnivore version of childhood goodness without all the added crap that is in the current boxes of the name brand product.

Yes, I am aware that gelatin is basically connective tissue and animal bones, treated with an acid, and boiled to make a fine powder.

I overlook that because gelatin is pure awesome.

Per my extensive research gelatin is awesome for many a thing that ails us:

1.) Improving gut health
2.) Reducing wrinkles and cellulite because of the collagen! {you know that expensive stuff we women spread on our faces and thighs…and some inject for fine line elimination…why inject it when you can eat it???}
3.) Coat the digestive system to eliminate headaches and allergies.

As many of my loyal readers know, Moose’s gut problems have been with us for some time.  Like many kiddos on “the spectrum”, they have chronic diarrhea.
Since I’ve grown tired of the medical circuit, time to take matters into my own kitchen.
Behold, the healing powers of gelatin.  Gelatin is recommended for people with Chron’s disease, colitis, IBS, etc.  So why not autism diarrhea?  Or mama’s crow’s feet?

But, if it stops my kid’s poop explosions, all the better, right?

Shall we have a glance at the name brand’s ingredients and why I’ve chosen the homemade route?

Culprit #1: Added food coloring.  Gah.  It’s bad.  It causes hyperactivity in susceptible kids {and guess whose kids fall in that category?}  Plus, it’s made from petrochemicals and I avoid food dyes like a kid avoids homework.
Culprit #2- Added sugar, sugar substitutes, and “artificial” flavors.  Enough said.  My take on sugar: it makes people fat and crazy. Sugar subs are no better.  Artificial flavors scare me, because of the mere word artificial.
Why can’t food just be food and not a science experiment? Back to basics, people.
So here’s my version:

THE NEW AND IMPROVED CRAP-FREE GELATIN DESSERT

I n g r e d i e n t s:
-4 cups of organic concord grape juice
-2 T of Great Lakes gelatin {GL was the chosen gelatin because it’s from grass-fed cows}

D i r e c t i o n s
1.) Divide the grape juice. 2 cups goes into a pot.  2 cups goes into a bowl.
2.) While you heat the cups in the pot, mix the gelatin into the room temperature juice.
3.) Just before the water boils, add the nearly boiling juice to the bowl of juice/gelatin mix.
4.) Pour into a 9X13 pan and allow to cool for about 15 minutes.
5.) Set in fridge for at least 4 hours.

You can even make those old school jigglers and feel all 80s.

Easy enough, right?

  8. FUN!!! Love the grass-fed gelatin!!!! I’d always (in my new healthy life) avoided anything calling for it b/c I was afraid of what may be lurking in the factory farmed cows tissues and such!
