Makeover Your Ugly Wire Shelves {Tutorial and a side of snark}

Got ugly 1980s wire shelving in your closet?  Don’t have the cash to upgrade to a solid wood dream closet?

Well, check out this bad boy.  I was so sick of looking at it, I was about ready to rip it off the wall.  It has been taunting me for 7 years, “I am so ugly, but you are stuck with me, baby”.

Instead I found some damask fabric, and covered it up!

Some tips:

1.) Measure, first. Then measure again.
1.5) Use good sewing scissors.  Not kid scissors from when you taught art five years ago.
2.) Every few inches, throw a little stitch in there so the fabric won’t move around.

The oh-so happy after:

This is a sneak peek at the epic closet makeover here at Momnivore’ Dilemma.
We are talking both in the looks and content department, people.
I’ve made over my wardrobe and the closet.
Yes, I will show you all the pretty clothes and shoes I buy too.
I mean the boys made my foot grow to a size 7 and being wheat-free shrunk me down to a size 0.
I have donated almost ALL my clothes and shoes. Sigh.
In the meantime, I will makeover my soul.
Does the MAC counter at Macy’s have something for that?
You know you want to follow along, so it inspires you to do the same.
Stay tuned, and go do something about those ugly wire shelves in your closet.
They need a facelift.

  6. I LOVE this! Our brand new home has the ugliest wire shelves and I hate them. I actually asked the developer if they could just not install them, but was told that it constituted delivering and “unfinished house” and they couldn’t do that. This is such an awesome idea!!!

  13. Great idea using the fabric – It keeps things from falling between the wires too! Fantastic job ~ Thanks for sharing! Hope you had a wonderful weekend ~ Stephanie Lynn http://www.bystephanielynn.com

I have those all over my house too. My husband doesn’t like them. The only way they got replaced in our master bedroom closet is that they CRASHED and fell off the wall in the middle of the night – twice.

I’m wondering if I can sabotage the rest…

Your shelf looks fabulous! I have them in my house too and they are totally ugly! I think I might do this in my pantry to spruce it up some and possibly help keep it more organized. I am probably dreaming there, lol!
