Going on a Hot Date…with myself

Last week, I hit the boiling point where I was ready to run away from home.  My house was in shambles.  Monkey didn’t nap all week.  Moose was defiant and cranky.  The husband and I were at each other’s throats.

So rather than feeling old and burnt-out like this:

I took advantage of an uncharacteristic day here in Chicago:

I told the husband, I wasn’t coming home after work. {I run a small tutoring company and work in the evenings}  I was going out to dinner alone.  Going to peruse stores for a new dining room table alone.  Going to wander some thrift stores alone.

Are you catching my theme here?

As mothers, whether working or SAHM, our alone time wanes.  You lose yourself in your roles, be it worker, diaper-changer, booger-wiper, wife, mother, chauffeur, blogger, what have you.

So, this was all about Nicolette, but of course, I had to share it with ya’ll.

So, I dressed up.  Put makeup on.  And took myself out on the town.

Given my foray into raw foods, it was only fitting that I chose a site that my carnivorous husband would rather die than eat at with me.

Karyn’s Restaurant.  Raw Food Emporium.  Headed by the Goddess of Raw herself, Karyn Calabrese.  She’s in her 60s and could smoke most 20 year olds under the table in the looks department alone.

The meal was divine.

Empanadas.  A fruit tarte.

Of course, that divinity was doubled because no one was asking me for milk, smearing food on the walls, or dumping bowls on their heads.

So, eating a meal without utter chaos, is sometimes, the best treat a parent can give themselves.
Most days, I feel more married to my kitchen sink than I do my dear husband.

The next morning I felt glorious.  I had the utmost patience with my boys.  A new found love for the day.  A lil spring in my step.

I think I will date myself more often.  You should too.

    I. Am so. JEALOUS!

Looks like you had some fabulous alone time. As mothers, we REEEEEALLY need to force ourselves to ALLOW time alone. I suck at that.

  2. Good for you. I hate those kind of weeks. And you know they can never be just days. They are always weeks.
And btw, Karyn doesn’t look a day over 40. And even that’s pushing it.

  3. Great post! There must be something in the air, because that’s how I feel too!! ;)

You are inspirational, my dear. I have been having “one of those weeks” all month long and am about ready to crawl into a hole and refuse to come out again. Part of it is my own making, since I can’t seem to say “no” and use good boundaries. I started off the year so well! Time to get back to taking care of myself…Thank you for your post!

  5. I love that you did that! I usually just go browse at Target or the Dollar Tree when I can escape for a bit:)

  7. In her SIXTIES?!?!?!?! Oh my Lord, my jaw is on the floor. I need to start eating more raw food.

Looks like you had a great time with your date!

Good for you! All of us need pampering from time to time. If you don’t take care of yourself, who will?

Were the empanadas or tart raw (and gf)? Looks yum!

  10. Love your blog…we all feel like this a lot more than we admit, don’t we? Good for you. I’m getting the hell out of Dodge myself. California, here I come. : )
